To receive the award, LPMC achieved of 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.

These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. They focus on appropriate use of guideline-based care for stroke patients, including aggressive use of medications such as clot-busting and anti-clotting drugs, blood thinners and cholesterol-reducing drugs, preventive action for deep vein thrombosis and smoking cessation counseling.

“Lake Pointe continues to strive for excellence in the acute treatment of stroke patients and this recognition from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association further reinforces our team’s hard work,” said LPMC CEO Brett Lee. “With a stroke, time loss is brain loss and this award further demonstrates our commitment to delivering advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely.”

LPMC has also met specific scientific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center, featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department.

Get With The Guidelines®-S puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping hospital care teams ensure the care provided to patients is aligned with the latest research-based guidelines. Developed with the goal to save lives and improve recovery time, Get With The Guidelines®-S has impacted more than 3 million patients since 2003.

“The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognize Lake Pointe Medical Center for its commitment to stroke care,” said Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. “Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program.”

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, and nearly 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Award demonstrates hospital’s continued commitment to quality care for heart failure patients

ROWLETT, Texas, May 25, 2016Lake Pointe Medical Center (LPMC) has received the Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation’s secondary prevention guidelines for patients with heart failure.

“We are dedicated to providing high quality care and outstanding customer service for our heart failure patients and this award reinforces our team’s hard work,” said LPMC CEO, Brett Lee. “The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure program helps us to provide exceptional care by tracking and measuring our success in meeting internationally-respected guidelines.”

Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure is a quality improvement program that helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. Launched in 2005, numerous published studies have demonstrated the program’s success in achieving patient outcome improvements, including reductions in 30-day readmissions.

LPMC earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the patient, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies. These would include ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics, anticoagulants and other appropriate therapies. Before patients are discharged, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other transition interventions.

“We are pleased to recognize Lake Pointe Medical Center for their commitment to heart failure care,” said Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. “Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program. Get With the Guidelines research has demonstrated the impact of lowering 30-day readmissions and reducing mortality rates.”

According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million adults in the United States suffer from heart failure, with the number expected to rise to eight million by 2030. Statistics show that each year about 870,000 new cases are diagnosed and about 50 percent of those diagnosed will die within five years. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications or devices and with healthy lifestyle changes.

If you've ever experienced a summer in Texas then you know it brings the heat, but how dangerous can it really be? Extreme heat or vigorous activity in the hot sun can lead to heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Learning the differences, symptoms and how to react could help save you or someone else's life this summer.

Differences in Symptoms

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are very dangerous and the symptoms for these heat illnesses can seem very similar. The main difference in symptoms is heat stroke may cause neurological dysfunction, while heat exhaustion does not cause any mental disturbance.  It is best to get out of the heat, drink plenty of water and rest immediately.

Heat Exhaustion:

It is important to recognize these symptoms. Failure to acknowledge symptoms of heat exhaustion are what enables the quick progression of a heat stroke.

  • Dehydration
  • Profuse Sweating
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle Weakness

Heat Stroke:

Although they can seem very similar, heat stroke most certainly has the greatest risks to a person's health. Heat strokes can cause organ failure and even death. If you begin to experience any heat stroke symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

  • A person's temperature is very high, usually over 104 degrees.
  • A person may experience neurological dysfunctions: confusion, agitation, delirium, seizures and coma.

Act Immediately

Knowing when and how to act when these heat illnesses arise can help save a life. If you or someone around you is experiencing these symptoms don't wait! Get out of the heat and seek medical attention immediately. Talk to your doctor about extra precautions to take to protect yourself this summer. Five Tips to Keep You Alert, Energized and Well-Rested After We ‘Spring Forward’

By Dr. Delano Fabro, medical director at Lake Pointe Sleep Center

Daylight saving time often brings people to begin dreading going to bed and waking up.  Let's be honest, no one likes the thought of shifting their schedule.  To those with kids, this is even a bigger challenge.  I encourage people to use this time to do an overall check up on your sleep habits.  Maintaining good sleep hygiene, regardless of the time of year, is always beneficial to your overall health and well-being.

1. Keep a consistent schedule and avoid napping.  The most important thing you can do to maintain your sleep cycle is to go to bed at the same time every day and wake up at the same time every day.  Yes, even on weekends!  Your body will be able to adjust to the new time easier when you are being consistent with your sleep schedule.

2. Get plenty of exercise. This goes for all members of the family.  The more active your child is, the easier it will be for them to get to sleep. Morning exercise is best as it stimulates your body and causes a release in serotonin, which is your body's happy hormone. Morning sunlight exposure helps regulate hormones that define your sleep/wake cycle. If you are unable to exercise, try to spend at least 60 minutes doing outside activities.

 3. Sodas and other caffeine (found in coffee, tea, chocolate, and some pain relievers) can interfere with sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, avoid caffeine for four to six hours before bedtime. One soda goes a long way.

 4. Eat an appropriate diet.  Your diet plays a big role in how well you sleep. Eating a healthy balanced diet is good for your overall health, including your sleep.   Avoid letting your child eat heavy meals, especially within 3-4 hours of bedtime.  Lighter, low calorie foods are best for snacking before bed.  Eating heavier foods or those that are high in fat and calories just before bedtime will not allow your child's body to rest.  Limiting the amount of liquids consumed before bed will help eliminate the need for your child to use the restroom during the night.

 5. Create a sleep-friendly environment for your child. Sticking with a bed-time and morning routine. Making your child feel comfortable will ease the transition.  The bedroom should not have electronic devices such as TV's, cell phones, tablets and other gaming devices.  Your child's room should be cool and quiet and a place they feel relaxed.

LPMC Staff - Wear Red Day.jpg

Lake Pointe Medical Center (LPMC) showed its support in the fight against heart disease by participating in National Wear Red Day, an annual part of American Heart Month. This yearly health observance, first recognized in 2003, was designed to save lives and raise awareness for heart disease, which kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined.

In addition to participating in National Wear Red Day, LPMC participates in the American Heart Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM program. This initiative is a hospital-based quality improvement program designed by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association to provide hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures for cardiac patients in their care. It empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart and stroke patients according to the most up-to-date guidelines.

Recently, Lake Pointe Medical Center (LPMC) celebrated their sixth annual neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) reunion with more than 200 former patients and their families. The event included a petting zoo, face painting, a visit from firefighters and more. The NICU reunion gives former patients the opportunity to reunite with some of the people that tended to them during their most vulnerable stages.

Many of the NICU nursing staff has been at LPMC for more than 10 years, and the reunion provides a great outlet for them to interact with their previous patients and learn more about the impacts they have made in their lives. The event is also a great outlet for LPMC to highlight the various new advancements they have made and will continue to make to meet the needs of babies and their families in the Rowlett community.

LPMC linked its NICU with Children’s Health System of Texas (Children’s HealthSM) using the pediatric hospital system’s TeleNICU program. The TeleNICU program will permit neonatologists at LPMC to collaborate on diagnosis and care with UT Southwestern Medical Center neonatologists on staff at Children’s HealthSM. In some cases, a TeleNICU consultation will eliminate the need for transport to another hospital, so newborns can remain in Rowlett and avoid the stress of transfer and travel on patients and their families.

2. Get plenty of exercise. Morning exercise is best as it stimulates your body and causes a release in serotonin, which is your body's happy hormone.

3. Maximize your sun exposure.  When it gets dark at 5:30 p.m., it becomes increasingly difficult to get the sun exposure your body needs. Increase light exposure in the morning, as this is the most important time of day to get in natural sunlight.  Morning exercise outdoors is a great way to knock two things out at a time. Take time during your day for light exposure.  Go for a short walk on your lunch break or take a 5 minute break to step outside and soak up some sun.  If you're having difficulty with a sluggish or run down feeling in the afternoon, you may benefit from bright light therapy for up to 20 minutes in the late afternoon.  You should consult with a board certified sleep physician before beginning a bright light therapy regiment.

4. Parents know that changing a child's sleep schedule can be very difficult.  The easiest way for children to transition is in pieces.  Starting about 7-10 days before the time change occurs, move their bedtime back about 15-20 minutes every couple of days. When the time change rolls around, they will be adjusted to their new bedtime.  If you find that your kids are waking up earlier than expected, leave them fun things to do while you get that oh-so-important sleep.

5. If you typically have issues with the time change, consult with your primary care physician or a board certified sleep specialist.  They can help develop a plan specific to your needs to help make the time change an easy process.

To schedule a sleep consultation with Lake Pointe Sleep Center call 972-526-7500 or visit www.lakepointemedical.com
