An American Thursday Murder Club with a twist!

The Retirees by Leah Orr is a lighter-weight Thursday Murder Club-style mystery-thriller set in an upscale fifty-five-plus community on Floridas Treasure Coast, and proved to be a lot of fun. After her unceremonious ouster as chairman of the board of the sugar empire her grandfather started, well-heeled new retiree Diana moves into The Oceans Edge, a grand fifty-five-plus community. She immediately attracts the attention of a group of amusing senior residents enjoying their special coffee in the country club, who invite her to join them the following morning after she gets moved in. Diana soon discovers that the small group also has a special hobby: examining cold cases at the behest of the local police department, under the leadership of one of their own a bored, retired former detective. The group already has a growing record of successes clearing old cases, and Diana is all on board, pleased to lend her own skills and high-level connections to their resources. All is going well with their new cases until a resident of the community dies under suspicious circumstances, similar to a couple of previous deaths at The Oceans Edge.

Diana takes to her forced retirement like a duck to water, and with the friendships and excitement her new pals bring, she quickly settles into life at The Oceans Edge. I appreciated how she leveraged her considerable influence, wealth, and the negotiated perks of her severance from the sugar company to aid in solving cases. One of those perks includes her personal driver, Jeb, whom she has counted as her best (and perhaps only) friend for almost 60 years and is starting to view in a much more personal light.

The story unfolds from a few interesting points of view. Besides Dianas viewpoint, theres that of the unnamed serial killer who lives among them in plain sight and the very special narrative of Mr. Anderson. Dianas voice is witty and snarky at times as she transitions to her new life, while the serial killer provides an eerie running commentary on his latest vigilante mission, offering glimpses into his past and how he came to be where he is at the time of the story. The cases the group reviews are simple yet intriguing, and their investigative techniques are unique. The banter among this quirky group had me laughing out loud on several occasions. I was hooked from the start and gladly read it start to finish in one sitting.

I recommend THE RETIREES for readers of mysteries and thrillers, fans of more mature amateur sleuths, and Richard Osmans Thursday Murder Club.

It wasnt the night theyd planned, but it turned out to be the night they needed.

A Retail Carol by Lee Vetter is an entertaining Christmas satire and an unexpected holiday treat; it is a story of desperation, connections, and redemption of random strangers brought together by time, place, and misdirected wants. The need they believed was critical for the perfect Christmas was the acquisition of the IT toy of the year the Plastic-Thing-3000, but it turned out to be the need for human connection and understanding.

The Westbrook Trading Company, with its aging edifice and barely on-the-edge relevancy, had miraculously held back a cache of what was to prove to be the IT toy of the holiday season that year and planned a stunning hourly raffle and midnight-hour final release of its stockpile for Christmas Eve. With the coveted Plastic-Thing-3000 having been sold out everywhere else for weeks, desperate parents crammed into the downtown store for a last-ditch effort at winning Christmas. Among the throng is a hopeful father of two and his single best friend for company; a worn-out single mother and her young daughter; a downtrodden husband, his clueless wife, and their bored teenage daughter; a local pastor with a secret past; the exhausted store employees; and the elderly store owner, who had concocted the last-minute holiday stand-off and hoop-jumping. Each customer goes to the store in hopes of scoring the prize of the season but comes away with something much more precious.

The story is a novelization of a Christmas production and clearly conveys each scene and character encounter with precise, cinematic-quality images, humor, and touching emotional impact. The narrative unfolds from the multiple points of view of the main characters, and readers share in their thoughts and motivations for what is to come. While the story foreshadows and seems to promise that deserving characters will achieve their hearts desires this Christmas Eve, there are some truly unforeseen twists in the plot that will surprise, entertain, and warm the heart. I would have loved to have seen this performed on stage, and I know I will be sharing this book in the future.

I recommend A RETAIL CAROL to readers of holiday stories.

Murder Under Redwood Moon is the first novel in author Sherri L. Dodd's cozy paranormal mystery trilogy, Murder, Tea, and Crystals, and is an exciting introduction to the magical and suspenseful story of Arista Kelly, a young witch just coming into her powers powers passed down in her family from generation to generation and coveted by a close family member.

After the loss of her parents as a child, Arista was taken in by her father's aunt, Bethie, and taught about herbs, crystals, nature, spells, and natural magic to prepare her for the day when her own powers would manifest. She grew up in the quiet mountain town of Boulder Creek, with lifelong friends who still reside nearby. But when one of her friends from middle school disappears and is later found murdered, and then other young women Arista knows are also targeted, she and her aunt protect themselves the best way Bethie knows. Still, Arista may have attracted a serial killer's attention.

Arista, the main character, is a positive personality, always looking on the bright side and giving people the benefit of the doubt. From the start, you know she is about to come face to face with the dark side of humanity, including that which resides within her own flesh and blood.

From its unnerving opening, a literal parent's nightmare, the suspense builds. But while maintaining this tension, the author must handle the heavy lifting of creating the world in which these characters exist, and the complex, multi-layered plot unfolds. Dodd quickly populates a small town and Arista's past and current relationships, and that is a lot of information to take in. But along with vivid, living, breathing imagery, I think she pulls it off and gives readers a solid sense of the place and the people who live there. But even as the world-building unfolds, the plot moves briskly, and I found myself really engaging with Arista and the story, staying up late to reach the exciting resolution.

I recommend MURDER UNDER REDWOOD MOON to readers of paranormal cozy mysteries.

Whine and Dine is the second book in veteran author Marc Jedels excellent Redwoods Country Mystery series, and proves to be a fabulous follow-up to last years debut, Rivers and Creaks. While all Andy Shirley wants is peace, quiet, and a lot of alone time, his ownership of the Quilt House Inn requires a much more hands-on effort. Thankfully, he has Nadia, the housekeeper and chef, to handle the day-to-day, and Charlie, the plumber/electrician and daughter of his new friend, Police Chief Joann Blaylock, on speed-dial for the more complicated jobs he cant handle himself. But when Charlies friend is suspected of murder, Andy reluctantly agrees to join forces with her to clear her friends name, in exchange for a hefty discount on some upcoming plumbing repairs, of course.

The story hits the ground running with a dramatic arrest on the porch of the inn and the discovery of the murder victim in the small, nearby town of Monte Rio, happening almost before the dust settles from the detectives car leaving the inns parking lot. Andy, a retired copy editor with a penchant for puns, is a cranky, grumpy wannabe recluse, and his inner monologue and dialogue with literally everyone absolutely sparkle with wit. The pairs unofficial investigation is fun as they attempt to stay on Charlies mothers good side while getting the job done. The secondary characters not only provide solid support but are also a quirky, colorful bunch, especially Nadia Radu. I was fortunate to be able to kick back and read the whole book in one delightful evening; the pages and time flew by.

I recommend WHINE AND DINE to cozy mystery fans, especially those who enjoyed the series kickoff and the authors other series.

BOOK REVIEW: ANASTASIA'S MIDNIGHT SONG by M. Laszlo

An atmospheric and complicated tale of madness set at the time of WWI.

Because she imagines that an arctic fox exists inside her womb, Anastasia goes to work in a Sinai mirror factory, believing that will drive the presence out. While in wartime London, Jack watches as other young men, his friends, head off to fight, leaving him unable to overcome his cowardice until he strikes on an alternate plan of action that sends him to the Sinai as well, where he sees and becomes enamored of Anastasia: attention and desire she doesnt return.

Anastasias Midnight Song by M. Laszlo is not a comfortable, easy book to read, yet it is riveting all the same. Told from the perspectives of the two main characters, Anastasia and Jack, I was mesmerized by what they were going through and kept off-balance by the fluidity of reality and fantasy. I turned the pages, hoping they each would find their way to peace and freedom from their hallucinations and depressions, but was unsettled by their ensuing descent further into their madnesses.

The storys settings are unusual, and the events of the time contribute to the characters problems. The authors descriptions of 1917 St. Petersburg and the Sinai create a palpably heavy atmosphere that I felt I was constantly wading through alongside the characters.

As the story unfolded, reality and Anastasias hallucinatory interactions with the arctic fox and Svetlana often merged, and I was uncertain what she was really experiencing, if there was still some reality at work. I also felt Jacks fear of going to war was well-founded. His childhood ill-prepared him both mentally and physically for life in general; he was delusional as to his skills and future already, and a wartime posting would have been certain death, especially considering the transition the mechanics of war were undergoing during WWI. Still, his cowardice and inability to join in the conflict preyed on his mind with tragic results.

With its character-driven plot and atmospheric imagery, I recommend ANASTASIAS MIDNIGHT SONG to readers of literary fiction.

Celebrating the holidays can be both fun and safe for your oral health if you think ahead. Dr. Stephen McDonald, clinical associate professor in comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas, and Dr. Partha Mukherji, clinical assistant professor in comprehensive dentistry at the dental college, offer tips to keep your mouth healthy.

The holidays are full of family gatherings, parties and other opportunities to eat indulgent foods. However, those holiday treats can wreak havoc in your mouth.

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas offers tips to help you survive the holiday season with your healthy smile intact, even if you eat a little treat here and there.

Dont graze on sugary snacks, said Dr. Stephen McDonald, clinical associate professor in comprehensive dentistry. Indulge, rinse with water and be done with it, at least for a while.

The amount of sugary foods and candy consumed during the holidays isnt great for your waistline or your blood glucose level, but it probably isnt the most important factor in regard to your dental health, McDonald said. The amount of time that your teeth are exposed to the acid produced by the sugar-ingesting bacteria is the key factor when it comes to cavities or tooth decay.

Seek snacks low in sugar, such as pears, which stimulate saliva production. Other teeth-friendly foods include unsalted nuts, carrots and avocados.

Keep to a routine

Whether traveling, attending parties or shopping, dont put off brushing and flossing. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes. Floss at least once daily.

While the ingredients in brands vary, all toothpastes contain mild abrasives that help remove food debris and stains on teeth, McDonald said. Look for the ADA Seal when purchasing toothpaste.

If you are on the go, pack travel-size toothpaste, floss and mouthwash to remove food particles and plaque.

Eat cheese

Pair cheese when choosing cavity-causing foods for in-between-meals snacking. Chewing cheese increases saliva flow and helps clear cavity-causing bacteria and sugar. An Academy of General Dentistry study found that eating cheese kept pH levels elevated for up to 30 minutes.

When the mouth is exposed to low pH for prolonged periods, cavity-causing bacteria can thrive, said Dr. Partha Mukherji, clinical assistant professor in comprehensive dentistry. The range for a healthy mouth is 6.2 to 7.6, slightly acidic to neutral.

Drink water, rather than soda

Drinking water before meals makes you feel fuller and less likely to overeat. If you replace sugary drinks with water, you also wash away food particles, encourage saliva production and reduce the chances of decay.

Keep these tips on your checklist, and you will enjoy all the holiday festivities and enter 2026 with a healthy mouth.

Not your average, straightforward financial suspense story.

GRQ (Get Rich Quick) by Steven Bernstein gets really quirky fast. Part stream-of-consciousness and part suspense, where the narrator continually breaks the fourth wall, it is the story of a manipulative financial advisor, a get-rich-quick opportunity, and his desperate client, Marlon, on the day his house is being repossessed. Can Marlon scrape together all the cash he has left, even emotionally pressuring his relatives and in-laws into buying into his dream of a cryptocurrency killing? Or will he take what hes got and walk away, hoping for another chance with the wife hes boldly lied to about their circumstances for years?

The storys delivery is unique, with short, first-person chapters from the financial advisor that reveal his backstory and confess his scheme to make money off his hapless clients. Those chapters alternate with how Marlon came to be where he is today, revealing shocking details along the way. The wife, Viola, is complicit in their situation by failing to take a more active interest and trusting Marlon to take care of her from the start.

The novel is fast-paced, with great galloping swaths of pages containing only a single line of text in an extra-large font, bullet points that prove the narrators current point. Marlon makes his final stand from the fallout shelter built into his home, the suspense of his risky move ratcheting up by the minute as Los Angeles is wracked by a series of earthquakes, with the BIG ONE just waiting to hit.

I recommend GRQ to readers looking for financial suspense stories and something really fresh, unique, and punchy.

Wrapping Neighbors in Hope at The Storehouse Community Center with Scarves for Christmas

St. Andrew Methodist Church members marked the third year of the Scarves for Christmas effort by crocheting, knitting, and distributing more than 1,300 scarves to neighbors at The Storehouse Community Center

Handcrafted with compassion, more than 1,300 scarves were lovingly distributed to neighbors served by the food pantry of The Storehouse Community Center over the past few weeks, marking the third year of Scarves for Christmas. The effort, led by members of St. Andrew Methodist Church, involved more than 55 ladies who began making and collecting scarves in 2024 for distribution in 2025. Additionally, Warm Up America, a national organization based in Carrollton, contributed 565 scarves to the effort.

Adding to the festive spirit, the ladies welcomed Santa and his elves and provided coloring books and crayon packs for them to share with children, creating joyful moments and photo opportunities for families.

When we first launched this effort in 2021, we distributed a total of 621 scarves, said Elizabeth Thomas, co-founder of Scarves for Christmas. With more neighbors coming to The Storehouse, we began preparing even more! We are also so grateful to the volunteers at Warm Up America for their support again this year. Creating a single scarf can take anywhere from 4 to 20 hours, depending on the complexity of its pattern. I speak for our entire group when I say that it was another joyful, heartwarming year!

The group, originally formed in 2021, recruited women from all over DFW as well as some outside of Texas. Many participated in St. Andrews prayer shawl ministry, which provides warm shawls to those in the hospital.

St. Andrew member Elizabeth Thomas was inspired to create scarves for neighbors at The Storehouse following a deeply personal experience. Recently widowed and facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thomas was going through a difficult time. When her friend and Scarves for Christmas co-founder Patti Hoff brought her a prayer shawl, she felt a renewed sense of comfort and hope.

I was overwhelmed with love and comfort from Pattis beautiful homemade gift, said Thomas. After visiting with her, we both felt a subsequent calling to spread similar comfort, joy, and cheer to others. As we reached out to others to participate, we had an overwhelming response.

Once completed, the scarves are sorted, individually wrapped, and tied with a bow. On November 18 the group gathered for a special blessing of the scarves.

There are so many hours that go into this project, and it is such a joy to see the neighbors light up when a scarf is placed on their food cart, added Patti Hoff. I recently received a note from one of the volunteers who served as a runner, taking food carts to neighbors cars during the distribution. The volunteer shared that there were so many smilesand even a few tearsbecause of our work, which means the world to us all. Through this effort, it is our hope that the scarves not only provide warmth but also lift hearts and bring hopeserving as a reminder that we are one community, and we care for one another.

We are deeply grateful to the ladies of Scarves for Christmas for the care poured into every scarf, said Candace Winslow, CEO of The Storehouse Community Center. Each scarf represents love in action. Through this beautiful act of service, they lived out their faith by bringing warmth, dignity, and hope, reminding our neighbors that they are seen, valued, and cared for throughout the season.

This holiday season in the Big Easy is anything but easy!

When Virgil surprises Ricki by hiring her father out of retirement as the cameraman for his upcoming cooking show special, shes ecstatic to be reunited with her adoptive parents for the holidays, and as theyll all be busy with the show and working at the Bon Vee Culinary House Museum, theyve planned their visit to extend into the New Year. Ricki wants to take the opportunity to pick her mothers brain about her memories of Rickis first days, when she was left at Charity Hospital as a newborn by her teenage birth mom. Josepha had always been supportive of Rickis quest to learn more about her birth parents, but this time, shes uncharacteristically vague and resistant to delving into the past, especially when Ricki stumbles across the name of one of Josephas former coworkers who worked in the Records Department at that time. Tracking the older woman down proves simple, but Ricki gets creepy vibes from her the minute she mentions her mother is in town, and terminates the visit before asking about her memories of the teenager who gave her up for adoption. However, when the woman is found dead in her home under suspicious circumstances the next day, Ricki and her parents become prime suspects in her death.

Crescent City Christmas Chaos is the fourth book in author Ellen Byrons intriguing New Orleans-set Vintage Cookbook Mystery series, and features vintage shop owner Miracle Ricki Fleur de Lis James-Diaz and her friends, family, and coworkers at the citys beautiful Bon Vee Culinary House Museum. Ricki has established a unique and successful small business that she loves and has embarked on a lovely new romance with celebrity chef and neighbor Virgil Morel. Their relationship is still in the early stages, and Ricki is quite taken with Virgils innate goodness, especially after her past romantic experiences. They really fit well as a couple, as do her adoptive parents, Josepha and Luis James-Diaz, who met, married, and relocated to Los Angeles when Ricki was small.

While the main plot follows Rickis well-done personal investigation into Phyllis Gibbss death, some interesting subplots vie for attention, including Virgils cooking special, the Bon Vee staffs cookbook project, and Theo Charbonnets curiously secretive activities. Rickis search for her birth parents has been a theme running through the series since the beginning, and little pieces of the puzzle have been revealed in each successive mystery. This book does not disappoint.

With its crush of great subplots involving a plethora of engaging recurring characters, I recommend CRESCENT CITY CHRISTMAS CHAOS to cozy mystery readers, especially those whove read the previous novels in the series and those who enjoy a New Orleans setting or adoption theme.

Certain Sensibilities is a contemporary womens fiction novel by Sondra Rice Newman that tells the unique and touching love story of a May-December couple. While their age gap is extreme, these two kindred spirits, soulmates, have the courage to build a life together, knowing their time will be short but trying to make every day special and count.

Cary, the young male protagonist, is 34 years old when he meets 89-year-old Elizabeth Gardner, a new resident at the care facility where he works. They share common interests and certain sensibilities that draw them to one another, and feel a connection unlike any either has ever experienced is forged. That connection allows them to open up to each other, showing their vulnerabilities, revealing unfulfilled hopes and unmet dreams, and confessing to past failures and indiscretions. Cary missed out on the opportunities to pursue his desired education and career, while Elizabeth regrets losing touch with a girl from her past to whom she feels she owes an apology. Together, they finally work to realize some of those desires.

The story is quiet and gentle and unfolds from both his and her point of view. The comfort they draw from having each other in their life is a joyful and satisfying tale. However, Elizabeth has some health struggles that both know she is not going to overcome, so each outing, conversation, and plan for the future has that knowledge lurking in the background. What begins as a meeting of the minds becomes a deep-felt and tender love. However, while they are as intellectually and emotionally close as a couple can get, their relationship never becomes sexually intimate. The story is a touching and emotionally satisfying treat.

I recommend CERTAIN SENSIBILITIES to readers of womens fiction, especially those with an interest in older woman-younger man relationships and gentle end-of-life stories.

Community Partners of Dallas (CPD) will host its annual toy distribution event on Wednesday, December 17, providing holiday support to thousands of children involved in the child welfare system across Dallas County.

Throughout the morning, child welfare caseworkers serving children through EMPOWER will arrive at CPDs office to select gifts on behalf of the children on their caseloads. Using wish lists submitted by the children, caseworkers help ensure each child receives a thoughtful, age-appropriate gift that reflects their interests.

Made possible through community donations and collaboration with child welfare partners, including EMPOWER, the annual toy distribution supports children during the holiday season while easing the logistical burden on caseworkers and families.

Pete Davidson is going to be a dad, and he co-built a custom Honda Odyssey with Tony Angelo and the Stay Tuned Crew as a part of eBay's new "Built to Spec" series.

As a part of the new series, eBay pairs cultural figures, builders, and automotive enthusiasts to deck out custom rides using cars, parts, and accessories all sourced from eBay. For drive, he wanted something that was both practical, comfortable and more than a little cool. It is absolutely no surprise that he chose to deck out a custom minivan.

Im about to be a dad, so I figured it was time to drive something practical but not boring... Ive always used eBay to find just about anything, like classic TV memorabilia and sneakers, so of course thats where I found my van too.

Turning His Dream into Reality

For Davidson's next chapter, he chose a vehicle known for its comfort, performance and convenience for parents worldwide, the Honda Odyssey. Local Doctors Provide Tips for Healthier Holidays

During this time of year, many people suffer from increased back pain, one of the worlds most common medical conditions. Thankfully, there are ways to improve back health and reduce pain, while enjoying the holidays.

There are a lot of contributing factors to back pain that we see during the holidays, says Jeremy Denning, MD, a neurosurgeon with Dallas Neurosurgical & Spine. One of the biggest is increased stress, which can lead to muscle tension, pinched nerves, muscle spasms and other back pain. Stress can also interfere with your bodys natural ability to heal, so its important to find ways to reduce stress.

Some common stress reduction techniques include meditation, massage therapy and exercise. For optimal back health, both doctors recommend a combination of core strengthening and cardiovascular exercise.

For core strengthening, focus on both the abdominal and the extensor muscles -- the muscles that help hold the body upright -- so that your spine is better supported, says Krishna Satyan, MD, also a neurosurgeon with Dallas Neurosurgical & Spine Its easy to overdo it, especially in the beginning, so start out small. If you arent sure where to begin or how much is too much, ask your doctor or personal trainer. Establish a regular routine and consider asking a friend to join you. Exercising with a friend can be fun and help keep you motivated. For cardiovascular exercise, consider swimming or walking because they create less stress on the body.

Dr. Denning recommends adding a few small exercises and stretches to everyday activities, particularly during the holidays. If youre looking for some quick exercises that will help improve your back health, try side planks or face-down planks. I do these in my office in between patients, a few times a day. Exercising doesnt have to be overly involved. A little more movement here and there can go a long way.

Another common cause of back pain during the holidays is body mechanics. Dr. Satyan explains, If youre traveling for the holidays or online shopping, you may be sitting for a long time. If you have to sit for a long time, every so often, get up, stretch and walk around. If you cant walk around, stretch in your seat by doing neck rolls, shoulder rolls and/or ankle lifts. Also, practice good posture as much as possible. Keep your spine straight with your head level.

Proper body mechanics also applies when standing for a long time, which often happens while shopping or cooking, activities that are common during the holidays. For these activities, the doctors recommend wearing shoes with good arch support, standing up straight while standing, putting weight on the balls of the feet, and limiting the weight that is carried on the back or shoulders.

If you carry a purse, especially one that puts more weight on one side of the body, try to limit that weight as much as possible. Even a small amount can cause imbalance and interfere with the natural movement of your body, adds Dr. Satyan.

Another way to improve back pain that may sound surprising is to stay hydrated. Staying hydrated helps keep your muscles, organs, joints and even the discs in your back healthier, notes Dr. Denning. How much water each person needs varies based on that persons unique lifestyle, such as activity levels, weight and salt-intake. If you arent sure how much you need, consider talking with your doctor or a nutritionist.

Interstate All Battery Center® of Longview Recycles More than 7,000 Pounds of Local Power

LONGVIEW, Tex. (November 2025) Interstate All Battery Center® of Longview, East Texas most trustworthy source of power, hosted a community recycling event and took in more than 7,000 pounds of hard-to-dispose-of items. Store Manager Doug Roberts, who was recently invited to serve on the Longview Board of Directors, was happy to help his neighbors get rid of those hard things.

Unloading these kinds of items safely is tricky, said Roberts. And we are happy to do our part to help keep discarded materials from going into our landfills, or being left on our streets or in our alleyways. If we make it easy, then people may think twice before just tossing it in the trash.

This is the first time Interstate Battery Center of Longview has hosted a recycling event. This years haul took in 5,440 pounds of shredded and recycled paper; 573 books donated by The Longview Public Library; 1,018 pounds of SLI; 28 pounds of SLA; 64 pounds of Alkalines; 9 pounds of Lithium; 460 pounds of cardboard recycled by the City of Longview; as well as 377 non-perishable food items donated to Longview Community Ministries.
